The Second Baptist Church

2412 Griffith Ave, Los Angeles CA, 90011

Join us this month for a Jazzy Fryday hosted by the Second Baptist Church's Memorial and Historical Commission! Come by for delicious fried fish, swinging music, lively company, and a historic venue! The evening features international violinist Karen Briggs, joined by Grammy-winning bassist James Leary, star drummer Quentin Dennard, and renowned pianist Rick Olson.

Karen Briggs, the star of the evening, has taken the music world by storm. She has performed with famed composer Yanni in his string orchestra, was mentored by Patrice Rushen, and was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show alongside Diana Ross! Karen is the first African American woman to have ever performed at the Herodian Theater in Athens, Greece, the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, and the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. Her talent isn't only international- early in her career she was a four-time winner of "Amateur Night at the Apollo," and went on to wow crowds at Carnegie Hall. Karen is thrilled to perform at the Second Baptist Church's Jazzy Fry, and hopes you will join her there!

The Memorial and Historical Commission has been in existence since the early years of the Church. In a publication for the church's 90th Anniversary Committee, Mrs. Ola Mae Daily "stated that the Memorial and Historical Commission had existed for more than half a century at that time." During the 1930s and 1940s Mrs. Vassie Davis Wright served as the Clerk of the Church. Mrs. Wright was very mindful of African American history and in particular the history of Second Baptist Church. In 1945 Mrs. Wright helped to organize Our Authors Study Club, a book club dedicated to the African American experience. Mrs. Wright and OASC affiliated with Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), which was responsible for Negro History Week, now African American History Month. The groundwork for the Memorial and Historical Commission was set over 80 years ago and this work continues to this day.

The purpose of the committee was to prepare and read tributes and resolutions for our deceased members at their services of memory. We still write and read resolutions and tributes for the members of our congregation who have passed away.

In 1966, during the renovation of Griffith Hall, a space was allocated for an Archives Room. An Archives and Historical Commission was selected for the purpose of gathering historical materials and artifacts. Rev. U. S. Donaldson was the chairman of the committee at that time.
